Wazap Adds Browser Search Plugin
The gaming search engine now offers a way to gain Wazap information from Google, Yahoo and MSN Live SERPs. When you do a search for game-related terms, the plugin offers a new box above the number one position that links to news, cheats, articles, etc. I love the concept, because for gamers, it puts information that they care about front and center. When Google Universal Search rolled

Keep the Wave Going: Bing Unveils Streetside Imaging for Maps, New Toolbar and More
Today, Satya Nadella Senior Vice President, Online Services at Microsoft unveiled new Bing features at an event in San Francisco. The updates involve Bing Maps, the Bing Mobile App and a new Bing Toolbar. There was also
Maps
- Streetside imaging - yes, that’s Microsoft’s version of Google’s Street View. It’s smart for Bing to compete with the Google monster on this one.
- Twitter integration - see real-time updates based on location
- Local Lens - indexes local blogs and tries to associate them with a physical location
- What’s Nearby - find what’s near a location. Staying at a hotel? Find the nearest pizza.
- Photosynths - integrating the photo technology into maps. Try “metropolitan museum of art in New York City” for an example.
Mobile
Microsoft has made the Bing Mobile app available for Windows Mobile. It was released for BlackBerry Storm last month.
The app includes voice search, maps, and quick answers. Windows Mobile users can browse to m.bing.com to download the app.
Toolbar
When Bing launched, the MSN toolbar integrated Bing branding into their toolbar. Now, there’s a new Bing Toolbar called the “Bing Bar.” Sounds like a candybar, I know. But Nadella characterized the new “Bing Bar” as a “virtual assistant.” It’s available for IE and Firefox, and here’s what it provides:
- Cashback detector - alerts you to Cashback deals while you shop
- Browse Plus - puts Bing to work, finding content, breaking news, sports scores, stock alerts, etc. while you browse.
- Search Assist - query suggestion feature
Social Network Visual Search Experience
Coming soon, Bing will integrate Twitter and Facebook feeds into Bing’s Visual Search experience. Bing says this will enable user to more quickly find status updates, upcoming birthdays, etc.

Finally Google Competitors Realizing Content Is Way To Go
Both Microsoft and AOL have laid out plans to concentrate on building their content channels. Yahoo should be joining suit.
Google is now the most visited site on the web, according to Alexa, a spot Yahoo maintained for years. Interestingly, Yahoo has more hot pages over at Alexa. When I looked a little while ago it was a sports page and news page. If Yahoo concentrated on their content as CEO Carol Bartz has mentioned previously and their new redesign is supposed to address, they may be joining Microsoft and AOL.
Microsoft is building out five verticals, yje Wall Street Journal reported. “In a new focus that will start to be apparent in the next month, MSN will heavily add to its News, Sports, Finance, Lifestyle and Entertainment offerings, weaving more data from Bing into the mix,” Kara Swisher noted.
Meanwhile, AOL is going for complete domination and this Friday will “unveil the early stages of a plan to become the internet’s largest provider of original content within two years,” the Financial Times stated.
If anyone is going to find a way to challenge the dominance of Google it seems content is the best approach.

Microsoft and Discovery Channel Partner for ‘Deadliest Catch’ Cross-Channel Ad Blitz
The fifth season of Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” begins tomorrow night at 9pm and the network chose Microsoft to conduct a cross-channel ad blitz. The ads will be seen on MSN, MSN Mobile, Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft Live Search and Xbox LIVE.
“Microsoft Advertising got it right on the first try,” said Danelle Sabathier, director, Digital Media Marketing, Discovery Networks. “They showed us they have the audience reach, resources and original content at their fingertips to create killer ad campaigns that have the potential to drive buzz and excitement, which is exactly what we were looking for the fifth season of our hit show. We are thrilled with the level of service our team received and how simple the process was.”
Discovery Channel has purchased 90% of the inventory on MSNBC, Fox Sports, MSN, MSN Mobile and Xbox LIVE to promote the “Deadliest Catch” premiere on April 14.
“The doors to our one-stop shop are open,” said Keith Lorizio, vice president of U.S. sales, Microsoft Advertising. “The Deadliest Catch campaign demonstrates how we are making it easier for customers to buy and integrate multiplatform digital campaigns. In partnership with just one publisher, advertisers reach a targetable, premium online audience where they consume digital content most — PC, mobile and TV screens.”
